I love taking family photos at Penasquitos Ranch House! It’s a hidden gem of a location in my opinion. I especially love recommending this place for family sessions if there are extended family members joining, or families who need an earlier start time then my ideal “golden hour“, due to little one’s bedtime.
Penasquitos Ranch House Has Lots of Areas
That Filter The Sun When It’s Still High
My number one priority as a photographer, is making sure lighting is good! All of my sessions happen during golden hour, which is the time of day when the sun is low in the sky. This is 1-2 hours after the sun rises, or 1-2 hours before the sun sets. Light is even and reflects beautifully on my clients’ faces this time of down.
Every so often though I have a client asking to start earlier, due to their little one’s bedtime. When this is the case, I choose a location that has shade or lots of foliage to filter the sun. Penasquitos Ranch House has both! The house offers great shade from the sun at the start of the session, while the trees continue to filter light as we hit the hour mark before sunset.

When it comes to my clients’ galleries, variety is what I aim for! I love taking family photos at Penasquitos Ranch House because there are so many backdrops that create beautiful images. The ranch house, trees, and large field all create beautiful scenery for a gallery that provides variety.

is Quiet and Private
As a family photographer, I want to provide my clients with a good experience. I want family photos to be fun, laid-back, and enjoyable. For these reasons I look for locations that are not too crowded or have a lot of room to move around. Even if there are a few other photographers there, there is still plenty of space for me to capture families in a secluded, private spot.
