How To Find A Photographer That’s Right For You | San Diego Family Photographer

Trying to find a photographer that is a good match for you is no easy task. I would venture to guess that the majority of people have no idea where to begin looking for a photographer to capture their family. Some people may ask around or even go to google, which are both great ways to find someone. But how do you know if those photographers are right for you? Today I’m sharing a few tips to help you find a photographer that is a great match for your photography needs, preferred style, and budget.

Step 1: Determine Your Preferred Style of Photography

This is the absolute FIRST thing you must do when finding a photographer. No two photographers are the same, and there are styles of photography that vary. If you are looking for posed, studio photos, I’m not the right match for you! However, if you are looking for lifestyle photos that capture emotion and connection, I just might be what you are looking for. 🙂

You wouldn’t go to an Italian restaurant and ask them to make Mexican food for you, right? Similarly, you can’t expect a photographer to capture you in a way that he/she isn’t accustomed to. When it comes to newborn photography, I always make sure potential clients know that I don’t pose babies in an unnatural way or in any pose that they would’t naturally do on their own. This is a very specific style of newborn photography that requires proper training to ensure baby’s safety. What I can offer them, is lifestyle newborn photography that captures babies in a relaxed way, typically in the arms of mom or dad.

All this to say, it’s so important to know what speaks to you when it comes to photography and what your desired images are for your family photos.

Step 2: Decide On Your Photography Budget

Once you have determined your preferred style of photography, now it’s time to figure out what you can afford. Everyone’s budget is different. For some, family photos are a high priority so they are willing to invest more in this experience. For others, it’s something they like having done but don’t want to break the bank. Whatever spot you fall on this spectrum, it’s important to determine how much you are wiling to spend for the photos you are desiring. There’s no point in reaching out to a photographer if you already know they are out of your price point. Which leads me to another important point: when searching google for photographers, make sure you find their pricing on their website prior to contacting them. This is almost like trying on shoes you know you can’t afford 😉 If you know the photographer is out of your budget, move on to another one. There are so many wonderful photographers out there! You WILL find a photographer that you love AND fits your budget!

Step 3: Check Google Reviews

For me, this is a big one! Anytime I shop on Amazon I check the product reviews before I purchase. The same goes with shopping for a photographer. Client testimonies are the best way to see if this photographer is who you are looking for. There is nothing better than hearing first-hand from a previous client’s experience.

Step 4: Check Out Their Social Media Images

Social media, for me, is a great way to showcase my work. I think of it as a photo album of recent sessions. It’s also a way for potential clients to view my style of photography and get a feel for what to expect from me. On my feed they will see:

Lots of snuggles
Families laughing
Movement
Parents holding young children
Parents hugging teenagers
Dads throwing babies up in the air
Mamas cuddling their babes

Viewing a potential photographer’s social media is one of the best ways to see if their style of photography is what you are looking for.

Step 5: Reach Out!

Once you have found a photographer or two that you feel would be a great match for you, it’s time to reach out! There are several ways to get in touch with a photographer-email, website contact form, instagram direct messages, or a good old-fashioned phone call. 🙂 A few things to note when you get in touch with them.

1) Do they respond in a timely manner?
2) Are they friendly and easy to chat with/email with?
3) Do they give you next steps in regards to booking or gallery delivery timeline?

I believe you can tell a lot about a photographer’s personality by interacting with them over the phone or email. It’s important that you feel comfortable with them since they will be capturing precious moments with your family!
