Whenever I receive an inquiry for family photography, the first thing I do is make sure the potential clients know that I am a lifestyle family photographer. It’s important to me that my clients and I are a good match. I want them to be happy with their images and I want to feel like I am serving them well. If they are coming to me for formal, posed, studio-type photos, they will be very disappointed! But if they are looking for lifestyle family photos, they are in the right place!
So, what exactly is a lifestyle family photographer?? I’m so glad you asked 🙂
Connection over perfection is the number one factor that separates lifestyle photographers from portrait photographers. My main focus is capturing connection between family members rather than perfect photos where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera. WIth that said, I always do my best to capture a few “money shots”. These are photos for Grandma where everyone is smiling at the camera. However, I don’t guarantee I will get these (hello wiggly kids!). And if I do, these photos make up a very small portion of my clients’ gallery. The majority of their photos capture connection between family members rather than forced smiles.
Emotion is what I am after as a lifestyle family photographer! I want you to hear the laughter in your children as you look at your photos. I want you to smile when you look at your kids loving on each other. And I want your heart to swell as you see the love in your family. Emotion is captured best in snuggles, kisses, and playful interactions. Therefore, this is what I encourage throughout my family sessions.
As a mom of 4 young kids, I know how important it is for kids to MOVE! As a photographer, I know that movement creates authenticity. It’s very hard to fake a smile or laugh when you’re running down the beach! Lifestyle family photography is filled with movement which creates genuine smiles, laughter, and connection among family members.
So, are you sold on lifestyle family photography??! If so, let’s chat!
