Family Photos at Coronado Beach | San Diego Photographer

As a San Diego wedding and family photographer, I photograph several extended families throughout the year. Coronado Beach is a wonderful place for family photos. The picturesque sand dunes that spell out Coronado and the iconic Hotel Del make family photos beautiful. Some of these families are  vacationing in our beautiful city, while others are San Diego residents who have extended family coming to visit. Whether they are local or not, an extended family session in San Diego is a wonderful way to capture and remember their time together in our lovely city!

Gathering your entire family together for an extended family session may sound like a chaotic experience.  Most of my clients, though, end their extended family session saying “that was actually fun!” I’ll take the “actually” as a compliment. 🙂  I want to let you in on what these sessions are like with me and what you can expect during our time together so you can come prepared, relaxed, and ready to enjoy this time with your family! Here are some tips along with some favorite images from this family’s session at Coronado Beach.

Extended Family Sessions are Fun and Laid Back

There are several more people involved in extended family sessions than in the usual sessions I hold. I know how much work and effort it takes to get everyone together, so I do my best to keep these sessions fun and playful. While I’m photographing adult children or grandparents, I let the kiddos run around and get their wiggles out. After taking some formal, posed shots, I love to play games or move around a bit to keep things interactive and light-hearted.

Come Ready to Love on Your People!

My primary focus as a San Diego family photographer, is to capture connection and emotion between family members. Your images should display your love for your family so come ready to hold, cuddle, hug, and kiss your people!

Expect to Have a Wide Variety of Images
in Your Final Gallery

Extended family sessions are a great way to update family photos not just of all members of your extended family, but those of your immediate family unit as well. I take a wide variety of family member combination photos: grandparents with grandkids, grandparents with their adult children, each individual family unit, grandkids alone, etc., etc. Extended family sessions don’t happen very often so I do my best to make the most of it!

Be Prepared to Play and Move Around

Depending on mobility level of grandparents, I like to move around a bit, get some walking shots, throw kiddos up in the air, and snuggle down on the ground. Wearing comfortable clothing and shoes is important for these sessions so that you are able to move and around easily. Coronado Beach is a wonderful place for family photos because it is large and has lots of room to spread out without too many people around.

When is the last time YOU had your extended family photographed?? I can’t think of a better gift to give the grandparents or a better way to commemorate a family vacation here in San Diego!
